Samurai Shodown: Kubikiri Basara (Good story.)

Kubikiri Basara is a playable character in the Samurai Shodown games. First appearing in the maligned third game, he has been in each subsequent release. I can't really stand playing as him, but his design, animation and story are quite compelling:

The main bad guy of the third game, Zankuro, murdered everyone in Basara's village, including Basara and his wife. Returning to the mortal world he seeks revenge.

While playing as him Basara vibrates with an intense rage, and flits in and out of the ethereal realm as if he cannot control his presence. Which, of course, he cannot. He's tense, gaunt and lightning quick, and when he wins a round he is taunted by visions of his dead wife. He laughs as she returns to him briefly before turning to a skeleton in his arms, at which point he shrieks and collapses.

It's really quite awesome, for a game to portray his anguish so well.
