Subject: Three things I want to believe about Anonymous
Anonymous, the group of internet do-gooders, is right up there with Wikileaks as a group I know little about, don't trust at all, and cheer for.  Regarding Anonymous specifically, there are three things I want to believe are true:

[Image: http://nfgworld.com/grafx/anonyfail.png]

1. Anonymous is decentralized.  Government and more recently, NATO attempts to cut off the Anonymous head are laughably naïve.  I take great pleasure in watching this battle between what I believe are lumbering old dinosaurs and anarchic, wild 'n wooly Anonymous.

2. Anonymous is good for us.  They fight the good fight, punish the unpunished wrongs, expose secrets and freak out the establishment.  I very much enjoy the idea that they're ready to punish companies for fucking people over.  Or, you know, not.

3. Anonymous is random.  There's no plan, there's no grand scheme.  There's a bunch of smart people connected to each other, who take great umbrage at the sorts of things more people would be upset about if they had any idea, at all.

I want to believe all of these things, but I don't know if any of them are really true.  It makes me happy to think that a million smart, disaffected geeks are wreaking a bit of havoc.  Anonymous doesn't work for me or for anyone else, but they're doing things that need to be done.

Recently Spain and Turkey arrested some hackers, and released some statements claiming they were members of Anonymous.

Quote by Techdirt:
These governments could have easily arrested people and charged them with hacking without making the connection back to Anonymous. Making such statements is like responding to trolls on internet forums. It's tough to resist sometimes, but it only encourages more such activity. And, of course, just as with trolls, this sort of thing really only plays into exactly what Anonymous wants. It builds up the group's own profile, increases the very necessary mythology, and likely improves the efforts to do more such activities (while protecting participants even more).

Anonymous is like a beehive.  Stop kicking it!  If you want them to go away, stop being assholes to each other.  It's not complicated, geez.
