Subject: Game of Thrones
So I don't know when or how it happened exactly, but at some point I became aware of a new American TV series called Game of Thrones. It's not playing in Australia yet, so I downloaded it, and ...
Well fuck me if this isn't the best story I've ever watched, bar none.

Everything about it so far, and I'm only three episodes in, is nigh perfect. From the camera work to the lighting to the set design to the acting to the dialogue. It's all just stunning stuff, and as each episode ends I sit on the edge of the couch positively thrumming with excitement.

Thousands of years ago there came a night that lasted a generation. Kings froze to death in their castles, same as the shepherds in their huts. And women smothered their babies, rather than see them starve. And wept, and felt the tears freeze on their cheeks.
In that darkness, the white walkers came for the first time. They swept through cities and kingdoms, riding their dead horses, hunting with their packs of pale spiders, big as hounds.

It's made by HBO, a company with a big budget and no fear of adult material. There's a healthy smattering of nudity and very coarse language, but never too much. There are old people with things to say, children discovering the treacheries of royal politics, affairs, usurpers, dire wolves, dragon eggs, bastard sons, decapitations, primitive foreign tribes of horse riders, and marriages made not for love but for power.
And this in three episodes!!

Every episode starts with a recap of the last, then the credits roll over deeply stirring strings while the camera swoops over a stylized maps and cities straight out of every fantasy novel.
It's intelligent, dark, violent, occasionally gory, and sometimes sexy. It's utterly brilliant so far. If you're not watching it, you should be.
