Subject: Weird things afoot
Sometimes people use weird terms to find this forum. Any discussion of child porn brings in the perverts pretty quickly. Other times it's spammers looking for this particular forum software, because they know how to automate the application process.
Typically the whole point of their efforts is to put links on pages displayed here so that google ranks their target site higher. One of the ways google ranks a site is by how many people link to it, so they spam the shit out of forums and add links and, hopefully, get noticed.
Anyway.
One of the weirdest ways they try to get noticed is referrer spam. This is spam that only shows up in the logfiles, historical recordings that only the system administrators see, and even they rarely look at it.
Yesterday I had a string of referrer spam from similar domain names. A bot comes to my site, says it was linked to here by another site, and then leaves. A few seconds later it comes back and says the same thing, from a different site, and leaves.
Look at that list of shithouse domains!! And all that spamming effort in the hope I'll notice it in my logs!? If I wasn't tracking down a different spammer I'd never have noticed.
I wonder what he thinks he's accomplishing.
