Subject: Someone Else's Photos
Over on Photocamel, a photography forum I frequent, one of the regulars posted some pictures which I felt were, frankly, amazing.  Perhaps they were made moreso by the girl...  You tell me:

some very interesting effects being used here, in particular in the first photo, really really short depth of field...very interesting (post processing?)
The girl is abit strange though, in many of the photos she looks really startled or like she is trying to shoot lasers from her eyes. really bothers me.

That's what appeals to me about her: the laser eyes pierce my soul.  She's so gorgeous it hurts me to look at her.

The short depth of field is accomplished by three things: large sensor, long lens, or large aperture.  Unfortunately with your camera (as with my old G3) you'll have a hard time achieving a similar effect: the small sensor, limited zoom and limited aperture prevent you from narrowing your DOF.  It's mostly because of the sensor size...  While you could achieve similar results with post processing, it's a massive PITA and you'll find it difficult to vary the amount of blur with distance.
