Subject: Holiday snaps from underground Chinese naval base
Now this was a bit of a surprise.  Over on InformationDissemination I found a recent post discussing a secret(ish) underground Chinese naval base.  It's a massive underground base, apparently, with all kinds of secret submarine accoutrements, like a hull demagnatizer and underwater cave entrances.  In my mind it's loaded with high-tech submarines and soldiers and mad scientists and spies, just like this decommisioned underground soviet sub base must have been like when the Russians still had money to run it.

What's really interesting though, is that according to Google Earth this secret Chinese base is a tropical paradise.  Not even 400 metres from one of these giant mountain-side entrances is what looks like a hotel...  And then 600m from there is a very pleasant beach hut.

In fact, the whole area appears to be FULL of hotels and holidaymakers.  There's dozens of images in the area, featuring scenic landscapes, tropical-looking beaches...

All right next to a naval base.

Huh.
