Royal Grail indeed!

The first one was one of my favourite games released this year. This doesn't look like TOO much of an 'upgrade' or 'change' though, so thats a minor disappointment, the least they could do is give the interface a minor color change, so that it feels a bit more fresh to the eye.

I'm hoping it has some form of multiplayer, it would really be all kinds of awesome to venture in these quests with a friend. Hastily drawing penii and vagii on the map.

What kind of game is it?  Dungeon crawl?

The first one was a kind of dungeon crawl where you do your own map. Sadly, even with that gimmick I got seriously bored of it within about 5 hours, because the actual RPG bit was tiringly unimaginative, feeling like a first-gen SNES RPG (or in fact 99.9% of all JRPGs even today).
You could have a team of 5 (or 4?) with you at any one time but they were all pathetically weedy apart from your main bloke, even after a lot of levelling. You tended to spend your time mapping about 10-15 more squares before dying, continuing, then repeat. It was distinctly un-fun for me.
First post. Hi and stuff! :)

Its not really RPG, just a dungeon crawler! Very old-school. But made with love. The soundtrack is an amazing piece of work, and Yuzo Koshiro actually composed it on classic, now-retro, sound hardware. So it sounds as if the game was produced twelve years ago.

They just added a new sample on the official Etrian Odyssey 2 site, check it out, its song #2: http://s2.atlusnet.jp/download/index.html

If they were weedy, thats because you sucked/needed to put more time into it, the game really allows you to become powerful! But it never lets up and its very unforgiving in its difficulty.. its a real gamer's game, everyone should check it out.

Plays like it too, but this 2nd one I'll definitely give a go as hopefully they'll have made some of the things I found yawnsome a bit more involving and improved the battle system somewhat. I'm not a fan of going into the same uninteresting area on one fetch quest to then be told to go back in by the same person and do it again but for a different shiny thing, then again, again, again. That one person could just give me a shopping list, you know? I really do like the drawing your own map gimmick though, it makes you a bit more involved in the adventure. This one might be the game the first one should have been :)
