Subject: On hail and orchards
Last Xmas I was in Melbourne, visiting some family with my dad, and on the way home we drove through Ringwood, where he grew up. His family owned a large orchard there and if they still owned the land now it'd be fantastically valuable.
Anyway, last night we had a fairly significant storm, and there was a lot of hail, up to thumb sized and kind of spikey. I was telling him about it, as he was away from the house and missed the fun, and he said that hail is why they sold the orchard, way back when.
Apparently their entire crop was wiped out two years in a row by hailstorms. Nothing to do but watch as every leaf and every fruit was knocked to the ground by hail, and after that my grandfather decided he'd had enough.
