Subject: Playing Super Metroid for the First Time
Despite being a gamer, and having been one for decades, I've never played Super Metroid. Well, I played it briefly, but when I did I followed the normal pattern: Run to the right, and see what you can see.

Well, there was a dead end.  Frustrated, I gave up, and swore off that Metroid shit.

Well, now I'm trying it again, and right off the bat I learned something: You can run to the left.  Fucking crazy, I know, who'da thunk ol' Nintendo would totally shatter the mold like that?

Holy shit, this game is a total ripoff of a game that came out three years later, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

Here, briefly, is a visual record of my first-ever Super Metroid adventure...

I totally failed right at the start: as soon as you get your missiles for the first time you can shoot five missiles to open a pink door.  I shot four at it and thought I should save my last one, and kept going.  Now, much later, I realize they ALL take 5 shots to open, and I don't feel like going back.

I wonder what I missed?  Save point?  Massive new weapons?  Samus in a bikini?  I'll never know!

I'm just now getting into Symphony of the Night myself. Reading about these games, the whole genre is called 'Metroidvania' in all the fan literature. I also missed out on these games, and the only reason I'm getting back into Castlevania is because it's one of the few RPG series I haven't touched.

This adventure into MetroidWorld came as a result of an insertcredit discussion.

So far I'm realy liking the game, it is basically SotN, but on SNES.  I'm not convinced I like the jumping dynamics, but I'm sure they'll grow on me.

Clever ol' Gunpei, totally nailing the Castlevania feel years before Castlevania did.
