Subject: Elizabethan Deviots
Why, in every movie set in Elizabethan or King Henry VIII times, when they raid castles, do they have to not just kill the woman or child they also have to rape them... What is up with that? seriously.

This was all brought on by watching that series, The tudors and bloody Shakespeares Macbeth. As much as i love watching Shakespeare, i always get so fired up in those rape and killing sprees. I want to punch the morons out. But see if i lived in that time i wouldnt have the authority to... Along with the anger comes grief, i have no idea why i begin to cry, but i guess it scares me.

Does anyone understand why, in these movies the women and children are always raped and killed?

My statement: "Please, if you must, kill his soul but do not rape his body, especially while he's alive"

It's a pretty simple act of power and control, usually expressed by people who normally have neither.  When you're oppressed all your life and you suddenly get the chance to run wild against your oppressors, you're not going to be polite about it.  You're gonna make those fuckers pay.

You can't really apply logical thought to an illogical process.  Truly understanding these kinds of things probably involves more closeness to them than I bet you'd prefer.

*Disclaimer* not excusing behaviour or anything like that!
Also have to take the conditions of the invading army into account, these men where taken from their villages and families, drag half way around the country and sometimes the known world, they lived in squalid conditions and then had to fight to the death fro a cause they probably couldn't care less about.
Now mix these crap conditions with massive amounts of  battle and fear induced adrenalin and you get yourself a rather asocial human being who will behave like an animal and do horrible things.
We still see this sort of behaviour in pretty much any army around the world and have a bunch of technojargon to explain the behaviour (post traumatic stress, psychosis, etc)..
As to why this behaviour is written into plays and books..its what happens, nothing is as shocking as reality, and Shakespeare loved his tragedies, why sugar coat reality?

There are two reasons why this is shown in these shows:
-1: Because, as NFG and Nardo have said; the attackers were usually in a fragile state of mind, and were starved of many everyday pleasures and needs (even more so than they were). So raping the women (and sometimes not just the women) seemed like a logical step.
-2: You've pretty much explained this yourself.

It provokes such strong feelings in you, that when you stop watching the show; you feel a little empty. So you watch the show again because it gets your adrenaline pumping.
