Subject: Coloured Cameras
I found this to be a little saddening:

Quote by Thom:
Panasonic apparently brought near equal quantities of black, blue, and red G1 bodies into the US at launch. While blue and red DSLR bodies might be selling in Japan, they aren't in the US. What happened was that the black bodies sold out and the blue and red ones had to be discounted to sell.

Really?  I loved the red and blue, I'd have snapped one up in a heartbeat if my camera had multiple colours.  I think it's a little bit disheartening when Americans turn out to be such conservative xenophobes.  Seriously, you won't buy it 'cause it's a different colour?  Is it so awful you flat out won't buy it?  Why?

I think these are awesome:

Yes, but I wonder whether out of all the buyers, what percentage of the white population bought black cameras?

Indeed, suggestions of slavery/racial overtones were intended.

I have a black camera.  It rarely does what I want and I suspect it's involved whenever I lose a memory card.

This problem with the cameras not selling in the States is an issue of perceived professionalism. Adults have stereo equipment, tool handles, and cameras that are black because it's utilitarian and spartan. Only small children and teenage girls have brightly colored gadgets and toys. Americans are pretty insecure about a lot of things.
