Subject: The Shoot Stories
Photos have more impact when they mean something.  When I see a powerful photo, it really has palpable impact when there's a paragraph to go with it.  Without further ado then, here's a recent photo and some story behind it.

This was a really fun shoot for many reasons, but the bubbles weren't one of them.  It seemed like a great idea, and I've shot a couple of random lowteens in the city before and it turned out awesome.  This day was too windy though, and all the bubbles just flew away the instant Jess and Gemma blew on 'em.  We kept trying, and we had mixed successes.  At one point it seemed the bubbles gave up, and neither girl could produce any for trying.  This shot was a rare success, taken in the food fair at Post Office Square.  The problem is the background - it's ugly!  Was nothing to be done about it.  I like the final result, but I do wish I could try it again and make it work.

Subject: Shooting on a restricted schedule.
On Sunday I had a scheduled shoot with DJ KayLi, his ute, and three beautiful girls in matching corsets and mesh stockings.  Since I had somewhere to be at 5, and he wanted to start in the afternoon, we arranged to meet at 2 and get two solid hours of shooting in before I had to leave.

It almost went to plan - it was nearly 3pm when the girls were all ready to shoot, and it was close to quarter-after when we reached the location and I set up the lights.  We busted ass for a full hour, trying positions and ideas out in a very rapid-fire session, and I'm super happy with the results.

I screwed up a few things: noticed a garbage can after getting it in a few shots; dropped my speedlight as wind knocked it over; shot a bunch of 1/3 dark images with too-high shutterspeed...  Two of the three girls have asked about doing solo shoots in the future, so I'm thinking it was a fantastic hour spent.  =)

Last Saturday was the first of my Regular Saturday Shoots and I met up with the very delightful Lisa M.  She hadn't been modelling for 15 years, and told me she'd need me to provide all the direction.  If that was true, we might have ended up in trouble 'cause my shoots are more collaborative.  Luckily for us both we worked very well, and we produced a series of very interesting images.  She was able to snap into model mode without hesitation, and had some excellent suggestions to offer.  I like this image 'cause it suggests a sort of foggy, old film atmosphere.  In reality, it was just a dirty lens.

Subject: Terror in the Tunnels
Last weekend I was shooting with a delightful girl at my favourite location, and as we were starting to wind down we thought to pop into the drainpipe for a few minutes.  She was a bit hesitant to drop down the manhole, but I passed her a nice lantern and she went down first.  I followed, but as I was standing on the ladder and passing her some gear I noticed one flash had shut down.  I stood there for a while, swapping batteries, half in and half out of the manhole, while she waited in the darkness alone.  When I dropped into the hole my model was shaking a little, but bravely said she was fine.  It became clear though that she was anything but: her hands were shaking noticably, and she did not look particularly happy.  Turns out some childhood experiences left her with a pretty solid fear of dark, tight spaces, and a few seconds later she was above ground again, trying to breath normally.  The rest of the shoot was above ground.
