Subject: Nintendo Famicom Disk System Manual
I've been working on something new.  With Zumi's help I've been translating the manual for Nintendo's Famicom Disk System.  This Famicom (NES) add-on device allowed the use of special floppy disks to play games.  There were two significant advantages to this: The cost of manufacturing games went way down, and the players could take their disks to the shops and, with the help of a special machine, re-write the disks with new games.

Many games were released on the Disk System first: Metroid, Zelda, Super Mario Bros. 2, and more.

Here are the first four pages:

And here's 5-20.

There are 32 pages total.

It was fun doing this.  I learned a little Japanese, and had some practice reversing the artwork so it was more readable for English viewers.

The trickiest one was the floppy on page 12.  It had to be reversed or it wouldn't have said Nintendo.  Less difficult were the two little guys on 15.  Now that I think about it I could probably have just reversed them, but instead I reversed the letters on their shirts, and adjusted the text to fit.

Flipping artwork kills manga ;) Keep the format original! :P
Oh and erm... nice job, but what weird shit really. I guess it may have got through to kids more than the usual reams of DO NOT TOUCH stuff that we get.

Nice work, champ, it looks great - but perhaps you should've considered starting to learn Japanese while you were in, oh, Japan? Numpty :)

Here's the next seven pages.  This is where it starts getting nicely technical, and is the reason I thought this manual was worth putting online.

Could you imagine Sony putting the technical details in their manuals these days?  They'd rather stab themselves in the eye than let anyone peek inside their precious machines.

Nitnendo too would be very, very unlikely to put these kinds of details in their manuals.

It's true actually that most hardware now won't come with the kind of technical explanations they used.  When was the last time you bought a video card that had the VGA pinout in the manual?  For that matter, did it even come with a manual?  Mine didn't.

This Famicom Disk System manual is a treasure from a lost era.

This is pretty spiffy!

I like the prerequisite "hot older teacher" to keep kid's attention through the technical stuff.

I used to eat this stuff up when I was a kid - loved learning everything inside and out about the systems.

Kind of a pity in our super-consumerism days that all systems have become "black box" style where you don't know what's in it that works, just what goes into it and what comes out of it.

Cool translation, ditto on the hot teacher =D

And we're done!

The last few pages were a trial of text arrangement, trying to come up with phrases that made sense, covered the desired material and fit in the allotted space.  Turns out 'condensation' is a massive word in English, but only a couple of kanji in Japanese.  It was a bit of a struggle from time to time!
