Subject: The new tablet market
microsoft wants a piece of every market which is good business sense... if you go about it the right way.

being as brilliant as they are, they are introducing the newest stillborn technology because the failure of KIN wasnt enough to make thing carefully consider things.

this time they are going after the tablet market... again.  apparently they still havent learned that x86 and portable devices is a bad combo.  reminds me of intel's attempt to break into the cell phone market with a x86 processor... for the fourth time.  yes, a x86 variant worked for xbox because it was plugged into the wall but you need to use use ARM CPUs for anything on batteries if you want it last for more than 10 minutes. use ARM processors, you idiots!  another reason for instant failure: they are slapping windows 7 with some touchpad functionality which will suck because there is no software designed for the touchscreen interface!

here's the article:

Microsoft announces Windows tablet PC plans

Tablet devices which run the Windows 7 operating system will launch in the coming months, according to Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer.

Asus, Dell, Samsung, Toshiba, and Sony are among the manufacturers working on Windows slate PCs, he told delegates at a company conference.

Mr Ballmer said the area was "terribly important" to Microsoft, but did not mention any specific release dates.

Subject: Blackberry Tablet confirmed, will support Flash
it would seem that the BlackBerry people want a cut off the action too.  guess what CPU they are using? big surprise, an ARM processor just like the iPad and every cellphone in the market.

the article from a reputable source than BBC:

Rumors of a BlackBerry tablet have been circulating for months, and statements from Rodman & Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar on Friday have rekindled the discussion with a little bit more accuracy.

A source close to RIM confirmed to Betanews that Kumar's statements were accurate, including the screen size, and the dual camera setup. But they gave us a bit of additional information that the rumors haven't covered yet: Flash support.

[Edit by NFG: enormous whole-article quote removed.  You can read the original press release, available everywhere if you wish.)

a preview of the new BlackBerry 6 OS which will likely be a key component to their tablet can be viewed at the following link due to a complete lack of html/embedded video support on this forum: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plWOkI_Urwo

Yeah, I'm not convinced there's a market for a 'me too' ipad clone.  I agree with everything you said in the first post's third paragraph.  -x86, +ARM, +custom OS and software.  You can't shoehorn windows onto a restricted-input battery powered device, it will suck.

But, unlike the ipad, it will be customizable.

Now then:

1. There is embedded youtube support.  Encase the video ID (not the whole URL) between [toob] tags.  If that's too much work, I'll give you a pittance for writing an AEVA plugin.
2. Don't paste the entire thing.  Narrow down your quotes to the important bits, link to the rest.
3. l2shiftkey.  The first letter in every sentence should be capitalized, damn you.

oh i missed this part.  i'm not convinced there's a market for tablets at all.  let's face it, apple sold a shitload of those fuckers because they have people that practically get off when they hear a new version of the iphone is coming out.  now, those people would be happy with it if it was an etch-a-sketch with an apple logo on it.  i dont think there will be a long term appeal for ipad.

for the record, the ipad is an iphone with a large screen.  the hardware is almost identical.

HOLY SHIT!  microsoft may have actually done something sensible for once!

Quote by BBC:
Microsoft signs deal on mobile processors

Microsoft has signed a deal with chip designer Arm that will give it in-depth access to processor blueprints.

.......

In a statement, Microsoft said of the deal: "With closer access to the Arm technology we will be able to enhance our research and development activities for Arm-based products."

the rest here

is it possible that they may actually consider using ARM for tablets and/or netbooks?  i sure hope so.  if it's only for damn phone OS, it will be a big disappointment.

You're misreading the purpose of the license. Nobody has to be a licensee in order to implement Arm processors in the hardware they design, manufacture, or sell. But licensees who fund research and development also influence the features and functionality of the product. Either Microsoft is trying to effect changes in the Arm standard that are an advantage for them specifically, or they're trying to extinguish the standard in the same way that Intel tried with the XScale variant.

Forgive me, I'm still a little sore about the way the Windows CE standards were trampled on. It was supposed to be a compact Win32 environment that you could run on any processor, and here at the end of the Pocket PC/Windows Mobile lifespan it only runs on Arm chips with custom Intel code that Microsoft wrote. I see bad history repeating itself here.

Yeah, when I heard this news my first instinct was to fear it.  Microsoft has never, ever bought something and done good with it.  Their history is littered with the detritus of innovative companies being ruined by malicious management.

Have you seen Engadget's story on the Kin phones from MS?  There's some tragic shit right there.  Recap: bought a company for the tech, let all the talent leave, then scuppered the whole thing thanks to internal egos and infighting, releasing the thing at the last only to satisfy a contractual obligation.

MS' interest in ARM is surely a bad thing for ARM.

Subject: Microsoft doesn't know shit about tablets.
A recent ars technica article rather blunty points out Microsoft's continued inability to understand anything but desktop PCs.  Steve Ballmer, the man in charge of Microsoft currently, is confident that their new tablet PCs will be running Windows.

Quote by ars:
The message was clear: Microsoft still doesn't understand why its Tablet PC concept has repeatedly bombed over the best part of a decade. Apple sold more iPads in its first three months of availability than PC vendors sold Tablet PCs in the whole of last year; in fact, the number of iPads sold in that period is likely to eclipse the number of Tablet PCs sold both last year and this. But still the company is persevering: stick a regular PC operating system on a laptop, give it a touchscreen, and then take away the keyboard and pixel-perfect pointing device. Ballmer even reiterated the company's position: slates are just another PC form factor.

The iPad is a neat package. It's not a device for everyone. There are lots of things the iPad doesn't do well; there are many things the iPad doesn't do at all. But it's not trying to be these things; it's a conveniently sized, highly portable, long-lasting media-consumption device. It's ideal for browsing the Internet, reading e-mail (with the occasional short reply), looking at photos, playing music and videos, and casual gaming. It doesn't need much in the way of configuration. It doesn't run Mac software. Every single piece of software on it is designed to be used with fingers. In no way is the iPad striving to be a PC, but it is because of this—because it's not running software designed for keyboards and pixel-perfect pointers, because it's running software that's simple and restricted, because it uses a slow, but low-power, ARM processor—because of these things that it is so good at the things it does do.

The article goes on to point out that, even if the interface issues with Windows itself were solved, the same problems would exist with every app made available to the device.  It's pretty clearly a bad idea, and it's a shocking failure by MS to realize this and act on it.

ugh...

it uses a slow, but low-power, ARM processor

800MHz != slow

800MHz + Windows == slow

800MHz + *nix == fast

Samsung is trying to get part of the action, probably with little to no advertising as usual so that it will disappear into obscurity! :#:

article: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-11163687
Quote by BBC:
Galaxy Tab unveiled as Samsung's first tablet computer

Samsung has become the latest challenger to enter the tablet computer battle, unveiling its Galaxy Tab at the IFA conference in Berlin.

The device will run on Google's Android operating system, with a capacity of 16 or 32Gb, expandable by 32Gb more.

It weighs 380g (14oz), and has an 18cm (7in) screen - smaller and lighter than its principal rival the iPad.

Vodafone has announced that it will distribute the device in European markets including the UK in October.

The tablet can connect via 3G networks, as well as wi-fi and Bluetooth.

It will employ Samsung's "Reader's Hub" for e-books and the "Media Hub" for music and videos. It supports Flash video and will be able to stream content to a TV.

Samsung called it "the first of the company's tablet devices", suggesting further models will be forthcoming.

im not so sure the smaller aspect is a good thing. :-/
