NSW minister resigns over adult sites

New South Wales Ports and Waterways Minister Paul McLeay has resigned over a sex and gambling internet scandal that has also reportedly caught up morals crusader, Christian Democrats Leader Fred Nile.

McLeay was forced to quit the frontbench on Wednesday after admitting to using a parliamentary computer to access gambling and adult websites — making him the fourth Keneally minister to leave cabinet this year.

In an uncomfortable, 11-minute media conference outside Parliament House, the married father of two admitted being humiliated and embarrassed by the revelations.

He apologised to his colleagues for further denting their chances at the March 2011 state election, saying his behaviour was not of the standard expected of cabinet ministers.

NSW Christian Democratic MP Fred Nile says a member of his staff viewed pornographic websites "for just a few seconds'' for research purposes.

However, the MP insisted neither he nor any member of his staff had been "sitting there perving" over porn movies in Parliament House.

"My senior researcher has conducted a lot of research into the pornography industry at my request because we have bills dealing with increasing the ban on pornographic materials,'' he told reporters.

"I have not accessed or viewed any of those sites but my researcher has, particularly ... the Sex Party, Eros Foundation and others and through those sites, they do have links to hardcore pornographic material which (those websites) support."

Mr Nile said his three researchers have assured him they were only investigating the links to the website.

“They use that information to draft documents and speeches for me.’’

He has asked the parliament to investigate the computers and take them away if they wish.

An audit of parliamentary computers conducted two months ago identified the Christian Democrat MP as one of the biggest viewers of adult content.

Mr Nile claimed yesterday his staff had used his log-on and done so for "research purposes".
