Subject: Bionic eye
So! I had my exciting Science moment today when I found out that the first tests of a bionic eye have been successful and previously blind patients are having their vision returning without use of a pair of glasses with a camera attached.

The procedure involves placing a 3mm by 3mm wide chip in the eye which contains 1,500 sensory elements to replace those in a damaged retina. It's powered by a battery, and is similar in idea to a cochlear implant. Subjects that have tried it out have been able to pick up objects from a table, read their own names, and one man saw his girlfriend's smile for the first time (I hope he liked it).

Pretty amazing stuff!

Found an article here if anybody is interested: http://www.gadgetsandgizmos.org/the-bionic-eye-that-helps-…

This isn't really new, I'm surprised to see it's being treated as such by so many news organizations.  I remember bionic eye trials from years ago.  They weren't high-res but they functioned, offering an exceedingly low-res image to the user.

This seems more like an upgrade on that earlier tech than anything new.
