Subject: Bionic eye
So! I had my exciting Science moment today when I found out that the first tests of a bionic eye have been successful and previously blind patients are having their vision returning without use of a pair of glasses with a camera attached.
The procedure involves placing a 3mm by 3mm wide chip in the eye which contains 1,500 sensory elements to replace those in a damaged retina. It's powered by a battery, and is similar in idea to a cochlear implant. Subjects that have tried it out have been able to pick up objects from a table, read their own names, and one man saw his girlfriend's smile for the first time (I hope he liked it).
Pretty amazing stuff!
