Us too, Father

| #microfiction | #nfgwrites |

It had been a long time since I came to these woods, but I know them well. Even now, in the darkest night I felt no fear, for I’d been following this path since I was a boy, four hundred and sixty some years ago.

“Wait, what?” I said aloud. “Four hundred years?” I looked around. This wasn’t right. I looked behind me. “Where’s the path?”

Ahead of me, it was as visible in the moonlight as it ever was in daylight. How old am I? I couldn’t remember. Why did I come to these woods tonight? If it hadn’t been so long since the last time, surely I would remember the path…

Why has it been so long since I was last here?

The trees whispered in the slow night winds.

I stopped. What winds?

The trees whispered. we told you not to come back

“Fuck you!” I shouted back at the unruly trees. “I made these woods! I made you!”

yes, father, will you unmake us too, father?

“If I have to!” I stood defiantly.

not if we unmake you first, they whispered for the last time.

Close ahead, too close, I saw the flames.
